Adrian Cuaron was born in San Jose, California in 1982. The son of an author of some repute and a performance poet, he has literary skills running through his veins, so it's scarcely surprising that he ended up in the profession he's in - scriptwriting. His father, Santiago, is Spanish, and his mother Mimi is American, but Adrian inherited his father's dark looks. He is also blessed with his father's charm, and he'll flirt with anyone that he finds even remotely attractive. Sometimes it's not such a blessing - he tends to make people believe he's interested in them when he's not - but most of the time it works in his favor.
Adrian grew up in San Jose and mostly had to entertain himself. His mother was often out in the big cities performing at night and had to leave just as Adrian got home from school, so he was left with his father, who would close himself away in his study and work on his manuscripts. It is this image of his father that Adrian tries to pass off as his own in the rare interviews he gets asked to give - the studious, quiet individual, shy and introverted and focused only on work. Of course, it's the complete opposite in reality. Adrian is charming, as previously noted. He'll flirt with anyone, and he sleeps with a lot more people than he should. He's extremely sociable and good at making conversation with anyone. The 'hermit artist' portrayal is as fictional as anything you find in his scripts.
By high school, Adrian already knew he was bisexual. He was as attracted to the girls in their skimpy cheerleading outfits as he was the boys with their tight football uniforms. He slept with two girls before graduating, and by the time he was done with college - he attended UCLA as a Creative Writing major - he'd slept with three guys on top of that. He has never officially come out to his father, although now he's in a relationship with a guy, he knows his mom has made Santiago aware of the situation. He doesn't intend to take his boyfriend home to meet the folks any time soon though, so it's not really an issue in his mind and never will be because he doesn't intend to really settle down any time in the future.
Adrian's first real success came two years after college, at twenty-four, when one of his scripts was optioned to be made into a movie. The movie turned out to be an unexpected success, and if Adrian wasn't a household name, he was certainly known within Hollywood circles. Adrian bought his west Hollywood apartment based on the success of that movie. He's had a couple of scripts developed since, and he lives comfortably on his medium level of success.
A year after becoming a known name, as it were, Adrian met Sam Giordese at his local coffee shop. He was instantly attracted to him and even came back to the same place later to get his phone number because he was so interested in him. Sam and Adrian went on to date for a few weeks before Sam told Adrian that he wasn't just a barista, but also an aspiring actor. Adrian was stricken, and, assuming that Sam was only sleeping with him to use him and get ahead in the movie world, he let things fade out without explanation. He didn't tell Sam the truth about why he'd let their relationship break off until they got back together the next summer.
Eventually, Adrian asked Sam to move in with him, not just because the walls in Sam's apartment were horribly thin and Sam kept complaining that his neighbours could overhear them having sex - Adrian personally didn't mind - but also because he likes having Sam around. Adrian isn't a monogamous type. He's never made it explicitly clear to Sam, but he doesn't want to be expected to stay completely faithful to him. They've never discussed it, and therefore Adrian knows that when he sleeps around it's cheating, plain and simple, but he can't bring himself to feel bad about it. Adrian likes Sam, he likes having him in his life, and he likes being with him, so he just doesn't mention it and hopes he either won't get caught or Sam won't care.
Adrian's a morally corrupt person. He knows when he's doing something wrong - like sleeping with someone who isn't his live-in boyfriend - but he can't bring himself to get too bent out of shape about it. He knows the fundamentals of right and wrong, and he isn't into breaking the law in any major way or getting into altercations just for the sake of it, but in relationships, he just does what he likes and hang the consequences.
